Top Five Tips

1) Pick your upholsterer by getting recommendations from friends & colleagues, or from editorial in magazines. Do not rely on adverts or phonebook listings, as you don't know what you are getting.

2) If possible, get samples of your chosen fabric and live with them at home for a couple of days. Fabric looks very different in daylight and artificial light. If this is difficult, try to take swatches with you from the room you want to put the furniture (i.e. fabric, wallpaper, paint, and carpet) then you know it will go with an existing colour scheme.

3) Take measurements, that gorgeous sofa looks great in the showroom, but will it fit through your living room door, go up and round the stairs, or will it have to go through the window?

4) What are the frame & body made of under the upholstery? Chipboard will soak up a spilt cup of tea, warp and possibly disintegrate. Traditional hardwood frames are sturdy, and will last for years.

5) Don't be scared to try something new. There are some fantastic fabrics available. Look around and take your time. Just remember a few important points. Firstly it must be fire retardant, the supplier can confirm if it meets current regulations. Make sure it will last, most fabrics will come with a recommendation for use, and with information on durability. Can you clean it? Some fabrics will sponge down, others you can use for loose covers and stick in the washing machine, some can be expertly cleaned, and others you will just have to prevent people with red wine going near.
